England Hockey Trophy: Round 3

Lockwood Park Dragons vs LA Carnegie ( 2 - 2 after extra time, 4 - 5 in sudden death flicks)

Round 3 of the England Hockey Trophy brought two local league rivals together once more.  Having lost 1-0 to LA Carnegie already once this season, and with the disappointment from Saturdays game against Driffield, Lockwood were ready to fight to the end to ensure success.

Right from the outset Lockwood made their presence known, creating attacking chances to rattle any confidence that LA Carnegie may have thought they had.  Early in the game Lockwood won a short corner that Sowerby struck like a dime, an LA Carnegie defender deflected the shot away but the Dragons presence was strong.  A break from midfield and captain Fillingham carried the ball into the D to create a clear shot for Blackburn who undercut the ball into the top left corner - only to see the LA keeper make an equally good save.  Further attacks followed, and when the LA Carnegie keeper failed to clear her D in the 33rd minute, Dexter pounced to score the opening goal.

Half time brought relief for LA Carnegie, but this was short-lived due to the introduction of Green in the second half.  A constant threat, Green provided Lockwood with a 2-0 lead from a superbly taken reverse sweep.  But the LA pressure was still strong from the team that makes every second count.  In the 53rd minute Lockwood's defence broke bringing the game to a much closer 2-1, and creating a pressurised atmosphere for the last 10 minutes.  LA Carnegie attacked, Lockwood's keeper Townend made some fantastic saves, but the rebounding shot found the back of the net, producing a 2-2 result at the end of 70 minutes.

Extra-time followed, the first half of which LA Carnegie charged forward to create shot after shot, but Townend was in form.  The second half was a complete reverse with both Fillingham and Dexter almost finding the net for that golden goal.

Penalty Flicks was to decide the game, and after the first round of 5 flicks, the teams were equal at 3-3.  This was a game that was fought to the bitter end, and bitter it was as Lockwood found themselves out of the trophy in a 2-1 loss at sudden death.  A disappointing end to what was such a hardly fought match from both teams.
