TRAINING TIPS

HITTING

Pretty important skill to have and one that doesn't always get practiced enough!! So if you want to practice those hitting skills during the week try these drills.
        • Using a tennis ball or lightweight mini hockey ball, practice your hit against a wall. This will also help you to practice your rebound skills as the balls will bounce back more than a normal hockey ball.
Point to note - full weight balls tend to do damage to walls outside!!

        • Tyre practice! A good hitter needs strong wrists and arms and this practice will help strengthen them. Get an old car tyre (one off a small car is best) and spend time hitting it as it lies flat on the floor.
Point to note - also pretty good for getting your agression out - would advise using an old stick!

DRIBBLING
Vital during the game and doesn't require a lot of space. Two more drills for this one.
        • Indian dribble practice. Lay a stick flat on the floor and practice your indian dribble by pulling the ball along the full length of the stick. The Australian hockey teams have to complete this drill 100 times in a minute!

        • Strength on the ball. Using that tyre again find an empty patch of concrete and push it along in a straight line.  This will help strengthen wrists and work on keeping the ball in a straight line!

GOALKEEPING
And finally for our wonderful goalkeepers!!
        • Wearing just leg pads find a patch of wall and using a tennis ball kick towards it and practice rebounding the ball. The ball will come back much faster than a
normal ball so will increase your reaction skills.

        • Stick clearance on the floor. Just wearing top half kit lay full stretch on one side and practice clearing the ball with your stick at full reach.
